This is a specific Google program and not the same thing as either of the two review types it gets confused with. Google says so itself: customer reviews are different from business profile reviews, the public ratings on Maps and Search, and only verified buyers contribute to them. They are also store-level rather than product-level, feeding the store rating that can appear beside your ads, which Google requires to clear a minimum before it will show.

The mechanism is a survey rather than a review form. You show an opt-in at checkout, Google emails the buyer after the order has been delivered, and the answer comes back to Google. Running it means a Merchant Center account, agreeing to share the buyer's order confirmation email address with Google, and the program is not offered everywhere.

The Shopify-specific wrinkle is documented in Google's own setup guide, which names the platform: when checkout happens on a third-party domain, you have to bring the customer back to your own order confirmation page for the opt-in to fire. Closing that gap is most of what the honest apps in this category do.
