Shopify stores a barcode; it does not issue one. The field on a variant is a plain string with no format enforcement, and outside Shopify's own fulfilment network nothing assigns a value: whatever you type is what you have. Worth separating from the SKU beside it, which is a different field for a different purpose, and Shopify says so directly: a scanner reads the barcode, not the SKU.

That leads to the distinction this category rarely draws. Generating a number and owning a number are not the same. A genuine retail barcode, the kind a supermarket till or a marketplace listing will accept, comes from a registration body outside Shopify entirely. An app can produce a unique string, print it as bars and make your own scanners agree with your own stock, which is genuinely useful inside your four walls, and is not the same as a code the rest of the world recognises.

What to look for in a Scan app

Decide whether the codes leave your building: For internal picking, packing and stocktakes, a self-generated code is perfect and free of any outside dependency. If products go to a retailer or a marketplace that validates the number, you need a registered one, and no app in this list can conjure that. Establishing which case you are in settles most of the decision.
Printing is most of the work: Generating values is trivial; getting them onto the right label stock at the right size on the printer you own is where the time goes. Shopify's point-of-sale app does not print labels itself, so check the desktop side of this properly, including which printers and paper sizes are actually supported.
What it does about duplicates: A generator that reissues a value already in use produces a scanner that picks the wrong product, which is worse than no barcode. Ask what checks exist across variants, and what happens when you import a catalogue that already has codes in the field.
