The Digital Product Passport is real law and it is mostly not written yet. The regulation sets the frame: a passport is required in accordance with the delegated acts adopted under it, and those later acts also decide the data carrier and how it is presented and positioned. So what your product must actually carry depends on a rule for your product group that in most cases does not exist yet.

Two things the regulation does fix. The passport must be connected through a data carrier to a persistent unique product identifier, and that carrier has to be physically present on the product, its packaging or the documentation with it. And the baseline content listed in the regulation is largely identifiers and paperwork: the product identifier, the declaration of conformity, manuals, operator and importer details. The sustainability material people picture, a repairability or durability score, a carbon or environmental footprint, is required only as appropriate per product group, again through future acts.

Which makes dates the thing to be careful about. The only firmly dated obligation is for batteries, under a different regulation entirely; the Commission's own page marks the general goods and textile rows as indicative. Read every "compliant from" claim on these listings against that.

What to look for in a Passport app

Where the data lives when the app is gone: Shopify has no compliance object, so this ends up in metafields or in the vendor's own database. Metafields stay with your products and have documented limits per app and per field; a vendor database does not stay with anything. Ask which it is, and ask for an export.
Who hosts the passport page, and for how long: The obligation is about the product carrying a link that resolves. If the page is on the vendor's domain, then a printed code on a product you sold has a dependency on that vendor staying in business. That is the most important question in this category and the least discussed on the listings.
What the identifier actually is: The regulation expects a persistent unique identifier and a registry behind it. Ask whether the app issues its own identifier or uses a recognized scheme, and note that Shopify's own free QR code tool links to a product page and carries no compliance data at all, so a passport QR is always something else.
Scope creep in the listing: Several of these bundle in other European rules, product safety and deforestation among them. Those are separate regulations with separate requirements. A single app covering all of them is a claim to check item by item rather than a convenience.
