The old way of changing checkout is gone. The template that once let stores edit it was retired in two stages, first for the information, shipping and payment steps and later for the thank-you and order status pages, and both dates have passed. What replaced it is a set of separate mechanisms with quite different plan requirements, which is the source of most confusion in this area.

The map is worth holding. Adding your own interface to the checkout steps themselves, and restyling checkout at all, are top-plan capabilities. Everything else is more open than people assume: content on the thank-you, order status and post-purchase pages works on every plan but the entry-level one, and so do the functions that hide, rename or reorder payment and delivery options, validate a cart, and apply discounts. Per-market checkout differences sit in between, needing one of the upper plans. So a standard-plan store cannot redesign checkout and can do a great deal around it.

What to look for in a Checkout Extensibility app

This phrase is a compatibility badge as often as a category: Much of what ranks here is a survey, upsell or loyalty app advertising that it is built on the current technology rather than the retired one. That is genuinely useful to know, and it is not the same as an app that customises checkout. Read for which you are looking at.
Match the capability to your plan before comparing: Almost every disappointment in this area is somebody on a standard plan buying a screenshot of the checkout page. Work out whether what you want lives on the checkout steps, which needs the top plan, or on the pages either side of them, which mostly does not.
Ask what happens to it when Shopify moves again: This whole area has been rebuilt once already, on a published timeline, and anything built on the old mechanism stopped working. A vendor who can tell you plainly which extension targets they use is one who will still be working after the next change.

Built for Shopify
Built for Shopify is the highest level of recognition Shopify awards an app. To earn the badge, an app must meet Shopify's standards for safety, performance, ease of use, and proven usefulness: it cannot slow down the admin, storefront, or checkout, must integrate seamlessly into the Shopify admin, and must demonstrate quality through installs, reviews, and ratings over time. Rankbase is made by Craftshift, a Shopify Partner building apps for product images, variants, and bulk catalog work. We built Rankbase to track the App Store rankings of our own apps first, then opened it to other developers, and this directory grew out of that work. The rankings on these pages are Shopify's own organic search results; we never edit them, including for our own apps.
