Shopify models a warehouse as one number per product per location, and that is genuinely all of it. A location tracks quantities and processes fulfilment; there is no shelf, no bin, no zone and no picking sequence anywhere in the data. Shopify's own preview of physical inventory features, still opt-in on development stores, describes bins as a new primitive and frames them as part of the complete set for modelling a stockroom, which tells you how little exists today.

There is a second, harder limit: how many locations you may have at all is set by your plan, with the standard plans permitting ten and only the top tier going substantially beyond that. So the honest boundary of this category is easy to state. You need warehouse software at the point where one stock figure per site stops being enough to find things, or when you have more sites than your plan allows.

Work out whether your problem is counting or finding: Knowing you hold forty of something is inventory. Knowing which shelf they are on so a picker can walk to it is warehousing, and Shopify does not do the second at all. If your staff can already find stock reliably, most of this category is solving a problem you do not have yet.
Check your plan's location ceiling first: If you are approaching the limit on your plan, that constraint may drive the decision more than any feature, and the answer might be a plan change rather than an app. Establishing this early avoids comparing tools that cannot fix the actual blocker.
Which system owns the stock number: Once a warehouse system exists, it will believe it is authoritative, and so will Shopify.
