Swatches are a native Shopify feature now, which changes what you should be shopping for. When a product is assigned a standard category, Shopify unlocks the category metafields that go with it, and a color attached to an option value that way becomes a hex value or an image that Liquid can render. Current versions of Shopify's own reference theme ship with the picker built in. Type the word "Red" into an option without linking it to anything, though, and you get text, because the swatch object holds exactly one color or one image per option value and nothing else.

So the apps here are rarely selling the swatch itself. They sell everything around it: getting hundreds of option values linked without doing it by hand, swatches on collection pages as well as product pages, sensible treatment of combinations that are sold out, and the one thing native swatches structurally cannot do, which is span separate products. A product carries a limited number of options, so when a color range is modeled as ten separate products rather than one product's variants, no native picker will join them up.
