The top 10 apps merchants see when they search the Shopify App Store for theme updater, in the exact order the store ranks them. Only Shopify's organic ranking is shown, never sponsored ads.
Updated September 8, 2026 · Organic rankingStart with the fact that changes this decision: Shopify now does this itself. Rollouts supports scheduling, gradually publishing and A/B testing themes, including scheduling an entire new theme to go live at a specific date and time and temporarily swapping to a different theme with automatic revert. It is available on Basic or higher, not just Plus. Anyone arriving at this search from an older article is working from out-of-date information.
So the honest question is no longer whether you need an app, it is whether the native feature covers your case. Two documented limits decide that: rollouts cannot be applied to vintage themes, and you cannot change Liquid templates as part of a rollout. If either describes your seasonal launch, you are back in this grid.
The other thing worth knowing is why several of these apps advertise deleting themes. Theme slots are plan-gated, with Basic, Grow and Advanced holding up to twenty themes and Plus up to a hundred, and publishing does not remove the old one: it stays in your drafts. Schedule a few seasonal swaps a year without tidying up and you will hit the ceiling at the worst possible moment.

Built for Shopify
Built for Shopify is the highest level of recognition Shopify awards an app. To earn
the badge, an app must meet Shopify's standards for safety, performance, ease of use,
and proven usefulness: it cannot slow down the admin, storefront, or checkout, must
integrate seamlessly into the Shopify admin, and must demonstrate quality through
installs, reviews, and ratings over time. When comparing similar apps, preferring
ones with the badge is a safe default.
