Shopify's reference theme has a video section and it deliberately does not autoplay: a poster image sits behind a play button, and the video is not loaded until somebody clicks. Its externally hosted option accepts two hosts only, YouTube and Vimeo, which is a platform-level constraint on the theme setting rather than a choice that theme made. So the hero that plays by itself, the thing people actually search for here, is not something the native section does.

The browser is the other half of it. Muted autoplay is always allowed and autoplay with sound is not, unless the visitor has already engaged with your domain. Any video banner that genuinely starts on load is therefore silent, and a listing promising sound on arrival is promising something Chrome will refuse.

This also lands on the most performance-sensitive part of your site. Shopify's guidance wants the largest element in the first viewport discoverable early and warns that hiding it behind a reveal animation can waste hundreds of milliseconds. A video hero is exactly that element.

What to look for in a Slideshow app

What loads before the video does: A poster image shown instantly, with the video arriving behind it, is the pattern that keeps a page fast. Ask what the visitor sees in the first second on a slow connection, and whether the poster is a real image rather than a CSS background.
A different file for phones: A landscape hero cropped to a portrait screen usually loses the subject, and a desktop-sized file on mobile data is expensive. Separate desktop and mobile sources are the feature to look for, and most listings here have some form of it.
Hosted by you or by a video site: An uploaded file is yours, plays cleanly and counts against your page weight. An embed is lighter to manage and brings the other site's player, its branding and its cookies onto your home page. Both are legitimate; the second has consent implications worth checking.
What it says without sound: Since it will be muted, the video has to work as moving imagery with your own overlaid text doing the talking. If the message depends on a voiceover, this is the wrong format for the top of the page.
