The obvious assumption about this category is wrong in an interesting way. Shopify does not only generate recommendations, it also measures them: its own discovery app reports the rate at which shoppers click recommendations and the rate at which they buy what they found there, and flags the ones nobody engages with. Analytics is not the gap.

The gap is where recommendations are allowed to appear. Natively they are a product-page feature, and an opt-in one at that, requiring a theme with the right sections added to the right template. The cart drawer, the checkout, the thank-you page and the email are all somewhere else entirely, reached through separate extension points.
