Shopify has a recommendations engine, and it cannot do this. The Product Recommendations endpoint takes a product id and returns what relates to or complements that product, so the answer depends on the page you are standing on, not on where you have been. Liquid has no object for a shopper's browsing history either. Every app in this category is therefore carrying its own tracking, its own storage and its own definition of "viewed".

That tracking sits in an odd spot for consent. Shopify's privacy signals cover analytics, marketing, preferences and sale of data, and preferences is described as things like language, currency and sizing. Nothing there is named for browsing history, so which signal a viewing log belongs under is the app's reading rather than a documented mapping. Worth asking about directly if you sell into the EU.

The other thing to know is what Shopify itself thinks these apps are. Its own category tags split them: some sit under product display and search, others under upsell and cross-sell and offers and recommendations. The split is real and you can feel it in the listings. Half are selling a convenience, half are selling revenue, and the widget looks identical either way.

What to look for in a Recently Viewed app

Where the history is kept: Since the platform stores nothing, the app does. Ask whether the list lives in the browser or against the customer record, because that single answer decides whether a shopper who browsed on a phone sees the same row on a laptop. Assume it does not follow them unless the listing says so.
What it does with the storefront: This is a row of products injected into a theme, so the questions are the ordinary theme ones: does it install as a section or block you place in the editor, can you put it on more than the product page, and does it survive a theme change. A widget you cannot move is a widget in the wrong place.
Whether it also sells: Given how Shopify tags these apps, decide which half you are buying. A navigation aid brings back the item someone lost. A cross-sell surface puts a cart button and a price on it and reports what that earned. The second is a different purchase with a different price.
Consent behaviour: A history log is visitor data collected before anyone logs in. Ask which consent signal the app respects and what it does when consent is refused: showing nothing is the correct answer, and quietly tracking anyway is the failure you are checking for.
Storefront weight: This feature is small, so the script running it should be too. Look at how the row loads, whether it blocks anything, and whether an empty history renders nothing rather than an empty box. First-time visitors are the majority and they have no history at all.
