Search this expecting a payment gateway and you will notice there is not one in the results. PayPal is already a checkout option Shopify offers directly, so nothing needs to be installed to take the money. What ranks instead is a much narrower job that exists because of where Shopify's tracking pipeline ends: when you fulfill an order and enter a tracking number, that number is used to keep the customer informed, on the order status page, in emails and in the Shop app. It does not travel to the payment processor.

PayPal, meanwhile, wants it. Its own documentation says the fastest route to funds held on a payment is to send PayPal the tracking number, that a hold is released roughly a day after the courier confirms delivery, that seller protection depends on valid proof of shipment or delivery, and that supplying valid tracking through PayPal is part of how a rolling reserve comes down. So the category is a small pipe between two systems, and the reason to buy one is cash flow rather than features.

What to look for in a Paypal Tracking Autopilot app

Whether you have the problem at all: If PayPal is a minor share of your orders and nothing is ever held, this is a subscription solving a problem you do not have. The stores that need it know exactly why: money sitting on hold, a reserve that will not shrink, disputes decided against them for want of proof.
Which couriers it recognizes: The sync is only as good as the carrier match. If you ship with a regional or local courier, check it by name rather than trusting a total, and check what happens to an order fulfilled without a tracking number at all.
The backlog and the ongoing job: Two different things: pushing history so existing holds clear, and keeping up automatically from now on. Ask how far back a first run goes and what it costs, because that is usually where the immediate value is.
