A points balance has to live somewhere, and on Shopify that somewhere is usually a metafield belonging to the app. This matters more than it sounds. When an app is uninstalled Shopify removes its metafield definitions and makes no guarantee about how long the values behind them are kept, with the cleanup running in the background afterwards. A reward issued into that outlives the app that issued it. Several listings advertise store credit without saying which of the two they mean, and the difference is between a reward your customers keep and a number that disappears with the subscription.

Ask which store credit it means: Shopify's own ledger and an app's internal tally are both called store credit in listing copy. Only one of them is still there if you switch apps, and only one is visible to anything other than the app that created it. This is the first question, not a technical footnote.
