Start with what you may already have: Shopify's own Google channel connects the store to Google Analytics as part of what it does, and it is free. A separate tracking app is worth paying for when you need something that connection does not give you, which is usually control over events rather than the connection itself.

The thing worth understanding before you buy anything is where the data comes from. Beyond the theme, tracking runs through Shopify's pixel system, and that system is deliberately fenced in. App-built pixels run in a strict sandbox; pixels you paste in yourself run in a sandboxed frame that cannot reach the top of the page. The events available are a fixed vocabulary, product views, cart changes, the checkout steps, checkout completed, and every one of them is gated on the visitor having allowed analytics.

Which means the gaps in your reporting are mostly structural, not vendor failures. A refund is not in that event list, so revenue in Analytics keeps counting money you gave back. Neither is a subscription renewal, which after the first cycle becomes an order created by a billing attempt rather than a checkout anybody completed. If either matters to you, that is the feature to shop for.

What to look for in a Google app

What you are not already getting: Install the free official connection first and look at it. If the events you need are there and consent is handled, you are done. If purchase values disagree with Shopify, or you need custom events, that disagreement is the specification for what to buy.
Refunds and renewals: Neither is a standard pixel event, so any app claiming accurate revenue is doing something extra, usually server side. Ask exactly how, and ask what your reports look like on a month with heavy returns.
