The awkward fact under every feed is that Shopify has no field for a product identifier in the sense channels mean it. There is one variant field described as "the barcode, UPC, or ISBN number for the product", a single loose string that could hold any of them or something else entirely. Shopify's standard metafields do split identifiers properly, with a UPC that must be twelve digits and an EAN that must be thirteen, and they are readable and writable across apps, which is why a feed tool can pick up an identifier another app or a person put there. Reconciling the two is work every one of these products has to do, and it is worth asking how each one does it.

The other thing to hold onto is that this is the multi-channel job. One catalog has to become a different shape for each destination, and every destination disagrees about required fields, category names and formats. What to look for in a Feed app

Where the values come from: A good feed is rarely a straight copy of your product fields. It needs metafields, a title built from several pieces, a description with the marketing stripped out, a category mapped per channel. Check that rules can read metafields and that you can preview the output row before it goes anywhere.
How identifiers are resolved: Ask what the app does with a product that has a barcode field containing something that is not a barcode, and whether it can be told to prefer a metafield instead. This is the single most common source of rejected items.
Variants, and how many rows you get: Most channels want an item per variant, and Shopify products can carry a lot of them within a three-option limit. Confirm how variants map, whether you can exclude some, and what happens with grouped or combined listings.
Markets, currencies and languages: If you sell in several countries, the feed has to speak each one: correct currency, correct language, correct availability and a link that lands on the right market.
