Shopify sorts a collection eight ways and no more: by hand, by best selling, alphabetically in either direction, by price in either direction, and by creation date in either direction. That list is the entire native vocabulary. There is no sorting by margin, by revenue, by how much stock is left, or by anything you have defined yourself in a metafield.

Membership is the other half. An automated collection picks its own members from conditions you set, up to a documented ceiling on how many conditions one collection may carry, after which existing ones can be edited and removed but no new ones added. This category lives in the space between those two facts: keeping membership automatic while making the order say something commercial, and holding particular products above whatever the rule decided.

What to look for in a Collective Retailer app

Separate the two problems before you shop: Which products are in the collection and what order they appear in are different questions with different answers, and apps here are usually stronger at one. Work out whether your complaint is that the wrong things are listed or that the right things are listed badly.
What it sorts by, and where that number comes from: Sorting by revenue or margin means the app is computing something Shopify does not expose as a sort, which raises two questions: over what window, and refreshed how often. A merchandising order that reflects last quarter is worse than alphabetical, because it looks deliberate.
Pinning is usually the thing you actually want: Most merchants do not want a different algorithm, they want three products at the top and the algorithm underneath. Check that pins survive a re-sort, that they can expire, and that pushing sold-out items down does not fight with them.

Built for Shopify
Built for Shopify is the highest level of recognition Shopify awards an app. To earn the badge, an app must meet Shopify's standards for safety, performance, ease of use, and proven usefulness: it cannot slow down the admin, storefront, or checkout, must integrate seamlessly into the Shopify admin, and must demonstrate quality through installs, reviews, and ratings over time. When comparing similar apps, preferring ones with the badge is a safe default. Learn more about the Built for Shopify badge →

Rankbase is made by Craftshift, a Shopify Partner building apps for product images, variants, and bulk catalog work. We built Rankbase to track the App Store rankings of our own apps first, then opened it to other developers, and this directory grew out of that work. The rankings on these pages are Shopify's own organic search results; we never edit them, including for our own apps.
