A watermark cannot be added when the image is served. Shopify's image transformations take a width, a height, a crop, a padding colour and a format, and there is no parameter for text or a logo anywhere in that list. So the mark has to be burned into the file itself, which happens one of two ways: the file is replaced at its existing address, or the old one is removed and a new one uploaded, which arrives as a fresh media object with a new address and no inherited alt text. Either way the picture in your catalogue stops being the picture you took. Shopify's own image editor is no help here, offering crop, rotate and a freehand draw tool but nothing for placing text or a logo.

There is a consequence no listing in this category mentions. Google's shopping requirements disapprove images carrying watermarks or promotional text, for paid ads and free listings alike, on the grounds that a product image must show the product unobstructed. Watermarking the same images you send to Google therefore costs you that channel. The one documented exception is a label disclosing that an image is AI-generated, which is a different thing entirely.

The question worth asking a vendor is whether it can mark the pictures on your storefront while leaving the ones in your feed untouched, and most of these listings do not address it at all.
Restore original is the app's promise, not the platform's: Most of this category advertises putting things back, and nothing in Shopify's documentation says a pre-watermark copy is kept anywhere. The undo lives in that app's own storage and leaves with the subscription. Keep your own originals somewhere you control before running anything across a catalogue.
