Updated October 10, 2026 · Organic rankingShopify assumes one merchant, and running a marketplace means arguing with that assumption in three places at once. There is no seller object: the vendor field on a product is a plain piece of text, which happens to share its name with the thing you actually mean. Staff permissions are categorical, granting access to products or orders as a whole and never to a subset somebody owns. And payouts go to one bank account on one schedule, so splitting income between many sellers' own accounts is not something the payment system does.
Everything a vendor experiences is therefore built outside Shopify: their login, their view of their own orders, their commission statement, their money. A location or a fulfilment service can stand in for one seller's stock, which is a genuine piece of scaffolding, but neither carries a login, a catalogue boundary or a payout. Shopify has no app category for this either, and files these tools half under accounting and half under marketplaces.

Ask what happens with refunds and chargebacks after a payout has gone out, because clawing money back from a seller is a conversation, not a transaction.
- What a vendor can see and change
- Since staff permissions cannot be scoped to one seller's products, any vendor dashboard is the app's own interface sitting on top of your store. Check what happens when a vendor edits a product, whether you approve changes, and what they can see about customers, since that last one is a data question rather than a convenience one.
- Who is responsible when an order goes wrong
- The customer bought from your store. Returns, complaints and delivery failures arrive at you regardless of who shipped. Work out the process before launch and check the app supports it, because the platform will not arbitrate and your customers have no idea a second party exists.
