Shopify supports this properly, and it supports less of it than you would expect. The platform stores the arrangement, takes whatever is due at checkout, keeps the customer's payment method on file and handles inventory. It does not run the trial. Shopify's own division of responsibility puts handling the trial and return period on the app, and charging the balance is a configuration the app triggers, at a fixed time, a set period after checkout, on fulfillment, or not at all.

Two consequences follow. There is no single try-before-you-buy setting: it is assembled from selling plans, which Shopify states directly, saying there is no single API for it and that the option is built from pricing, delivery, inventory and billing policies. And the payment gateway decides whether you can do it at all, since the documentation names a short list of supported gateways rather than leaving it open.

One thing worth flagging: this search returns two different products. Half of it is the payment arrangement described here. The other half is virtual try-on, where a camera shows the item on the shopper rather than the postal service doing it.

What to look for in a Try Before You Buy app

What the customer is charged, and when: Nothing now and everything later, a token amount up front, or a hold on the card are three different promises. Pin down the trigger for the final charge and what happens when the stored payment method fails on the day it fires.
When the stock leaves your available count: Inventory can be committed when the order is placed or when it ships, and it is an explicit setting. A trial program that commits on sale can hide weeks of stock in transit and returns; one that commits on fulfillment can oversell it.
The return leg, which is the actual product: Since Shopify leaves the trial and return to the app, the return experience is what you are buying: labels, a portal the customer can use without emailing you, reminders before the window closes, and what happens to somebody who keeps everything and ignores you.
Your gateway, first: Check your payment provider against the supported list before comparing anything else. This is the requirement most likely to end the evaluation, and it is not something a vendor can work around.
Where it will not work: Deferred purchase options come with documented gaps around other parts of Shopify. If a meaningful share of your orders come through point of sale, draft orders, B2B or checkout links, find out how those behave before you offer trials on the whole catalog.
