Store credit is a real Shopify object now, and knowing its shape saves a lot of comparison. A customer has a store credit account, accounts are currency-specific so one person can hold several, credit is issued to a customer or to a B2B company location, and each individual credit can carry its own expiry date rather than obeying a store-wide policy. Refunding an order to store credit is built in, provided the newer customer accounts are enabled and the order belongs to a customer.

What Shopify does not have is a reason for the balance to grow. The native operations are issue, debit, revert and expire; there is no rule engine, nothing that says give back a percentage of every order or a fixed amount per referral. That automation is what this category actually sells, which is why the same listings talk about cashback campaigns, tiers and workflow triggers as much as about the balance itself.

One caution on the word: in these results it almost always means a store credit balance, but it can also mean passes in a phone's wallet app, which is a different product entirely.

What to look for in a Store Credit app

Whether it uses the native account: A balance held in Shopify's own store credit account behaves at checkout, in customer accounts and in refunds without anybody teaching it to. A balance held in the app's database has to be applied by the app, usually as a discount code, and that difference shows up in your reporting and on the day you uninstall.
The earning rules you need: This is the part you are paying for, so be specific: percentage of order value, only on certain collections, only after the return window closes, on a referral, on a review. Check whether rules can be scheduled and whether they can be run retroactively for a campaign.
Expiry, and who is told: Since expiry is set per credit rather than as a store policy, the app decides the policy. Ask how it is applied, what the customer sees before it happens, and whether expiring credit is something you can report on.
Currencies: Because accounts are per currency, a customer who bought in two currencies has two balances, and Liquid exposes a single balance to your theme. If you sell across markets, ask what the customer sees and what happens when they check out in the other one.
Credit or points: A currency balance is simple and legible. Points with a conversion rate are a loyalty program with different maths and different accounting. Several listings do both; decide which you are running before the settings decide for you.
