The field on a variant is a plain string with no format enforcement, and outside Shopify's own fulfilment network nothing assigns a value: whatever you type is what you have. Worth separating from the SKU beside it, which is a different field for a different purpose, and Shopify says so directly: a scanner reads the barcode, not the SKU.
That leads to the distinction this category rarely draws. Generating a number and owning a number are not the same. A genuine retail barcode, the kind a supermarket till or a marketplace listing will accept, comes from a registration body outside Shopify entirely. An app can produce a unique string, print it as bars and make your own scanners agree with your own stock, which is genuinely useful inside your four walls, and is not the same as a code the rest of the world recognises.

If products go to a retailer or a marketplace that validates the number, you need a registered one, and no app in this list can conjure that.
