Two free things cover most of what this category sells. Shopify has its own QR app, which generates a code pointing either to a product page or to a checkout with the product already in the cart, optionally carrying a discount code, and it lists your fifty most recent codes to pick from. So when a listing promises scan tracking, ask whether it means their dashboard or yours, because the second already exists.

What the codes actually encode is worth understanding, since it is the same mechanism underneath: a cart permalink, of the form /cart/{variant}:{quantity}. It accepts line item properties, checkout fields, one or more discount codes, a note and attribution parameters. Two documented limits matter for a printed code: selling plans do not work with cart permalinks, and a permalink cannot get past a storefront password.

What to look for in a Shopcodes app

Try the free path first: A poster driving people to a pre-filled cart with a discount is entirely doable with Shopify's own tools. Establish what an app adds beyond that before paying: usually it is dynamic codes, design control, or reporting across many codes at once.
Dynamic, or printed forever: The single most valuable feature here is being able to change where an already-printed code points. If you are putting codes on packaging or signage, treat that as essential, and ask what happens to your codes if you stop paying.
Where the scan lands: A product page and a filled cart convert very differently, and a filled cart with the discount already applied differs again. Ask which destinations the app supports, and test the whole path on a phone, from camera to thank-you page.
Attribution you can reconcile: Insist the app puts UTM parameters on outgoing links so scans land in your own marketing reports. A vendor scan counter and your Shopify sales figures will never agree otherwise, and only one of them is auditable.
Not the warehouse kind: Shopify's own categories file most of these under SKU and barcodes alongside label printers, and the intent is different. If you want barcodes on shelf labels for scanning stock, that is a separate category with separate apps.
Printing quality and quiet zone: A logo in the middle of a code and a heavy print run are how scans start failing. Ask for vector output, check the error-correction level, and scan a real printed sample in poor light before committing to a run.
