Shopify sends email itself, and rather more capably than this category implies. Its own tool comes with a free monthly send allowance that resets each month and does not roll over, and it already runs the automations sold hardest elsewhere: abandoned cart, abandoned checkout, browse abandonment, a welcome series, win-back and birthday. Abandoned checkout sends do not even count against the allowance. Capture is a separate free tool, which is not installed by default, and that is why plenty of merchants never find it.

So the useful question is narrower than which email app. What the paid platforms add is one flow spanning email, SMS and push rather than three tools that each know half the story, deeper segmentation, and connections to everything else you run. Those are real advantages. They are also the vendors' own claims rather than anything the platform documents, and they are worth weighing against a free tool that already covers the common cases.
