Nothing in a Shopify order records who referred it. Which mechanism, and what it does when that mechanism fails: Nearly every listing advertises fraud protection, which in this category almost always means code leaking. Ask what it does concretely: refuse the commission, alert you, rotate the code? "Fraud protection" as a bullet point tells you the vendor knows the problem exists, not that they have solved it.
How the money actually leaves: Most of these pay affiliates through a third-party payment service you connect yourself, which means another account, another balance to keep funded and another set of fees. Shopify's own option instead settles through your Shopify bill. Neither is better, but they are very different to operate, so decide which one your bookkeeping wants.
Where the referral is recorded on the order: Order tags are a single list that is replaced wholesale when written, so an app that stores attribution there can quietly overwrite tags something else was relying on. Note attributes and metafields do not have that problem. It also decides what you can still see about past sales after the app is gone.
How many affiliates you expect: A programme that mints one discount code per affiliate is doing bulk code creation, and that is rate-shaped work: capped per request, one job at a time. For a few dozen partners it is invisible. For thousands, ask how long onboarding a batch actually takes.
