Shopify already covers some of this at no cost, though more narrowly than the name suggests. Its chargeback protection applies to fraudulent and unrecognised disputes on orders paid through Shop Pay, for merchants based in the United States, on physical goods, and only where the order was fulfilled with valid tracking inside a tight window. Where it does apply, the disputed amount and the fee come back as a credit and you take no action at all.

Everything outside those conditions is yours. A different checkout, a different country, a digital product, a slow fulfilment, or a dispute raised for any reason other than fraud, and the money is genuinely at risk. Shopify does not decide the outcome either: the customer's bank does, on the evidence you submit, and that decision is final. This is the gap the category sells into, and it divides in two, between screening orders before you ship and assembling dispute evidence afterwards.

What to look for in a Fraud Control app

Work out what is actually uncovered: Your real exposure depends on how your orders are paid for, where you are based, and whether you ship physical things. Some stores discover most of their volume already qualifies for free protection and the remaining risk does not justify a subscription. Others find almost none of it does. Establish which you are first.
