Read Article 50 before you buy anything here, because it splits the duty between two parties and almost every listing leads with the wrong one. So whether your AI product photography triggers your disclosure duty is a real question rather than a settled one. A generated model wearing your dress may well meet the threshold. A background swapped behind a bottle probably does not. Anyone selling you a blanket mandate is overstating the text, and a lawyer in your market is a better source than an app listing.

On the Shopify side there is nothing native to build on. Product disclosures exist, but the documentation says regional groupings such as the EU are not modelled and the shipped taxonomy entries are United States consumer-safety ones. The image object in the Admin API carries alt text, dimensions, a URL and metafields, and no field for provenance data. And an app embed block is inactive until someone turns it on in the theme editor, which the app cannot do for you.

What to look for in a EU AI Act app

Know which duty you are discharging: Marking a file so machines can detect it is the generator's job. Telling a shopper in plain language is yours. An app that only paints a badge has not made your images machine-detectable, and an app that only writes metadata has not disclosed anything to a human.
How it decides an image is AI: Some of these detect automatically from provenance data or filename patterns. That is a guess. Ask what happens to a false positive on your best-selling product photo, and make sure you can override the decision per image.
Overlay or baked in: A storefront badge is reversible and lives only where the app renders. Writing the label into the image file is permanent and travels with the file into feeds, emails and marketplaces. Both are defensible; only one is undoable, so ask about the undo before you run it in bulk.
The icon is not the law: Several listings market an official EU icon. Article 50 requires machine-readable marking and clear disclosure, not a specific logo. Judge these on coverage and clarity rather than on a badge design, and be wary of copy that appears in more than one listing word for word.
Everywhere the image appears: Product page, collection grid, cart, quick view, emails, your Google feed. Ask where the disclosure renders and where it does not, and remember the block will not switch itself on: someone has to enable it in the theme editor after install.
A record you can produce later: The useful part of these apps is the log: which images were labelled, when, and by whose decision. Ask for an export. That is the artefact you will want if anyone ever asks, and it outlives the app.
