Consignment breaks two of Shopify's assumptions at once, and both are worth seeing before you shop. The first is ownership: every inventory state the platform models, available, committed, reserved, damaged, safety stock and quality control, describes stock you own. There is nothing for goods sitting on your shelf that belong to somebody else until somebody buys them.

The second is cost. Shopify holds one unit cost per item, set in advance, and its profit reporting only counts products that had a cost recorded at the moment they sold. On consignment the cost is the consignor's share, which is not settled until after the sale, so it never reaches that report. Which means the numbers you actually run the business on, what you owe each consignor and what you truly made, live entirely in the app. That is why almost everything in this category is filed by Shopify under accounting rather than inventory.

Without one you are the reporting layer, answering the same question by email all week, and that cost grows with every consignor you take on.

Look at how a batch gets photographed, described, priced and listed, whether anything is approved before going live, and how long one item takes end to end, because that number sets the size of business you can run.
