Two facts about Shopify explain why this is an app and not a theme setting. Collections are flat: the collection object has no parent and no children, so there is no category tree in the platform for a trail to walk. And Shopify's reference theme ships no breadcrumb at all. Whatever hierarchy your trail shows is therefore invented somewhere, usually from your navigation menu or from a tree you maintain in the app.

The other half is which collection a product belongs to, since most belong to several. The only native way to give a product page collection context is the within filter, and Shopify attaches a caution to it: the same content then exists on two URLs, and it tells you to consider the SEO implications. The canonical product URL never carries a collection segment, so a trail is a signal to the reader and to structured data rather than something the address bar reflects.
