Shopify creates automatic discounts on its own: amount off, free shipping, and buy X get Y, applied without a code and limited to everyone, to named customers, or to a segment. What it will not do is combine them freely. Discounts belong to classes, and which classes may stack is decided by the platform rather than by you: by default only one product discount applies to a given line, and two shipping discounts never combine at all.

There are also two separate ceilings worth holding in mind, because they are easy to confuse. A store may run only so many active automatic discounts in total, app-created ones included, and separately only so many discount functions.
