The baseline is higher than these listings imply. Shopify's media editor already suggests alt text for images that have none, and accepting the suggestion saves it to the file. Themes are also more forgiving than you might expect: the Liquid image tag falls back to the resource title when no alt text is set, so a product photo is rarely rendering with nothing at all. What to look for in a Alt app

Generated or templated: A template built from the product title, type and variant produces text that is accurate, boring and predictable. Generation from the image itself produces text that describes what is actually in the picture, and occasionally describes it wrongly. Look for the ability to use both, and to review before saving.
Length, honestly: Given the recommendation to stay well under the cap, check the output length on your own products rather than trusting the setting. This is where the two audiences for alt text diverge, since a person using a screen reader wants a short sentence, not a keyword list.
What happens to new images: Alt text is a maintenance job, not a project. The feature that matters six months from now is detecting images added since the last run and filling them automatically, including images that arrive through an import or another app.
Everything except product photos: Collection banners, blog images, theme section images and files uploaded through the media library all need alt text too, and coverage varies more than the listings admit. Ask which surfaces are included before you assume the catalog is the whole job.
